Designing Human-Centered APIs
Virtual, January 2022
Human-centered design is a common phrase these days in the software product world. Taking a human-centered design approach means starting with the people you’re designing for and designing and building your solution alongside them, with empathy and iteration. This can feel foreign or challenging to an API team, and especially for a product team that also happens to maintain an API: after all, aren’t we building for applications, for machines, rather than for humans? In this talk, I discuss how to reframe this perspective, connect with your users, and better build APIs for and with humans.

Making space for community knowledge-sharing in a distributed world
Virtual, December 2021
Staying connected and learning from your teammates on a distributed team or in a highly siloed organization can be hard. Written knowledge-bases (if you have them) can be dry or become out of date, and replicating hallway conversations where you can bump into new people or share stories (and commiserations!) with coworkers can feel out of reach in a virtual environment. Despite the obstacles, I’ve found that cultivating an engaged remote community and fostering peer-to-peer knowledge sharing is possible. This talk will cover real-world tactics I use at the US Digital Service to engage communities and empower people to be resources to each other, whether they’re in the same room or thousands of miles apart.

Bridging the Gap: Applying Lessons from API products to Healthcare Enterprise Integrations
Paris, December 2018
Leading the integrations team at a fast growth startup that lives at the intersection of healthcare and social services, I have worked with clients on both the payor and provider sides of the industry. Each of these groups have different resources and approaches to technology and business, but both are struggling to adopt modern API practices. This talk covers what I wish I’d known before trying to build out an API program at a startup serving these enterprise customers with complex, highly customized, on-prem legacy IT systems.
